Medically Tailored Meals Legislation - Please Provide Your Comments

Recently, a bill was introduced to the NJ Assembly (A5332) that proposes to require “Medicaid and NJ FamilyCare to provide medically tailored nutrition services for certain enrollees.” We’ve already heard from a couple of our members who would like to propose amendments to this bill and we would be thrilled to hear from more of you!

A5332 states that when a patient’s physician prescribes “medically tailored nutrition services,” NJ’s Medicaid and FamilyCare programs will provide coverage for:

  • At least 10 medically tailored meals per week for patients with congestive heart failure, type 2 diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or renal disease.
  • Medically tailored foods, in an amount sufficient to prepare 14 meals per week, for patients with type 2 diabetes or obesity.
  • Nutritious food subsidies ($25 per week or greater) for patients with pre-diabetes, overweight, hypertension.
  • Medical nutrition therapy (amount and duration is determined by physician) for patients with diabetes or renal disease.

A5332 also states that all “medically tailored nutrition services” addressed in the bill will be designed and overseen by a dietitian or a licensed nutritionist. We plan to provide comments on this bill to the NJ Legislature. If you’d like to share your comments with us please add them to this copy of the bill or email them to Please join the NJAND Public Policy Panel in making our expertise and voices heard in Trenton!
